The World War II era Lato Duplexes, three similar but not identical units, were constructed by the Lato Co. Inc. in a residential area just beyond the edge of downtown Camden. They were completed in 1943, just in time to address the sharply increased housing needs which accompanied the construction of the massive Naval Ammunition Depot across the Ouachita River at Shumaker (now East Camden). Established in 1944, the NAD remained active through the Korean War. Following the war boom years, the duplexes served for years as compact small apartments and many of Camden’s older citizens fondly remember time spent there. Yet many decades later, after passing through multiple ownerships and as residential property of choice moved to the suburbs, these buildings had greatly declined in their appeal.
In recent years a neighborhood revival effort led to the recognition of Clifton and Greening Streets National Register Historic District—an area noted for its display of sequential eras of Camden residential building and of the architectural styles associated with each. Consequently the Lato Duplexes enjoyed renewed appreciation for illustrating the building wave accompanying Camden’s defense industry boom years and for exemplifying Minimal Traditional Architecture—a style distinguished by simplicity and by the use of affordable materials in keeping with the demands of the time. Two of the structures were added to the National Register in 2001 and the third in 2011.
In keeping with this effort, a partnership of neighbors in the Historic District, formed for the purpose of reviving the neighborhood treasures, has rehabilitated the duplexes in a way that retains such historical signatures as the original hardwood floors, the original multi-pane windows, and the original asbestos plate siding on the exterior. Interior accommodations, however, have been updated to provide the modern amenities of internet service, Cable TV, washer-dryers, a microwaves, and modern apartment size refrigerators and cookstoves. The apartments are fully furnished and linens, cooking utensils, and flatware are provided. Off-street parking is available as well as cleaning service either once a month or weekly as requested.
Thus the Lato Duplexes have returned to service in a role similar to their original one--—to provide those with a mission in the area an attractive rental residence near Camden’s city center.
